ASSAULT

The number of victims of Assault in Tasmania increased by 6% from 2,754 victims in 2014 to 2,926 victims in 2015. Males and females each accounted for approximately 50% of Assault victims. The most prevalent age for Assault victims was 25 to 34 years, accounting for just over a quarter of total person victims (27% or 789 victims). (Table 31)

Just over half (55%) of male Assault victims knew the offender, while 87% of female Assault victims knew the offender. For male victims, 13% were assaulted by a family member, while for female victims, 40% were assaulted by a family member. (Table 35)

Over two-thirds (68%) of female victims were assaulted in a residential location compared to just over a third (36%) of male victims. (Table 33)

All Assault victims aged 0 to 9 years knew the offender, with the offender identified as a parent for 53% of victims. (Table 35)

SEXUAL ASSAULT

The number of victims of Sexual assault in Tasmania decreased by 30% from 227 victims in 2014 to 160 in 2015. Females were over five times more likely to be a victim of sexual assault than males, accounting for 86% of victims. The most prevalent age for Sexual assault was 15 to 19 years. (Tables 6 & 7)

The most prevalent location for Sexual assault was residential, representing two thirds (66%) of victims. (Table 8)

The majority (80%) of Sexual assault victims knew the offender, with the offender identified as a family member for 29% of victims. (Table 11)


ROBBERY

In comparison to other offence types, Weapon use was most prevalent amongst victims of Robbery (49%). The most prevalent weapon used was a knife, which was used in just under a quarter of incidents of Robbery (24%). (Tables 9 & 34)
